Three tips for proper cannabis storage

How to keep your products fresh, effective and safe

Whether it's dried flower or oil, here are the 3 most important rules to keep in mind when choosing where to store your cannabis at home:

1. Keep it in the dark

Studies have shown that light exposure (and subsequently, decarboxylation) is the one of the greatest factors in the degradation of cannabinoids. The process of decarboxylation happens naturally over time but is significantly slowed when cannabis is not exposed to light.

To enjoy your cannabis products for a longer period of time, store them in an opaque container, away from direct light and in a cool place. Exposure to light will rapidly reduce the THC content within cannabis, promoting the production of CBN instead – a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found mostly in aged cannabis.

Controlling the temperature at which your cannabis is stored will also slow the process of decarboxylation and prevent the damage of its terpenes. Temperature is discussed in the next section.

2. Keep it cool and dry

The second most important rule to remember about proper cannabis storage is ensuring your products are always cool and dry. Although you might think the easiest place to store your cannabis (while simultaneously keeping it cool) is in the fridge, it might not be the best idea if your product is not vacuum sealed.

Storing cannabis in the fridge can result in mold and mildew due to inconsistencies in humidity and temperature levels. High levels of humidity can affect cannabis degradation by re-introducing high levels of moisture back into dried flowers and risking the introduction of ammoniated flavours. Low humidity will cause your leaves to dry out and become brittle and fragile.

Opt instead for a cool, dark cabinet or drawer that isn't in frequent use. The ideal temperature is above freezing and below 20º Celsius.

3. Keep it out of reach

The holiday season is the perfect time to be at with all your friends and extended family. However, this might also mean that you suddenly have curious little ones exploring the nooks and crannies of your house. Always be sure to keep your cannabis products safely out of sight and reach to avoid accidental consumption by children and pets.
