Learn about cannabis

All the education, explanations and solutions you need to help you understand the world of cannabis.

Cannabis 101

Cannabis is complicated. Read on to understand the science behind the plant.

In Cannabis 101, you’ll learn about the different kinds of cannabis plants, the chemical compounds that generate its health effects and where the “buds” – the flowers that are used for consumption – come from. But you’ll also find answers to your questions about consuming cannabis, from the safest way to consume it to the many different kinds of therapeutic effects you can expect.

Strain types

Indica

Indica plants are usually under six feet tall and are typically shorter than sativa plants. They have wider leaves and shorter flowering cycles, and are more hospitable to colder climates. They’re also known for higher yields.

Sativa

Sativa plants are usually taller than indica plants, their leaves are often skinnier and they tend to have longer flowering cycles and lower yields. A warmer climate may be required for growing sativa plants than for growing indica plants.

Hybrids

Hybrid cannabis strains come from crossbreeds of indica and sativa plants, and can be indica- or sativa-dominant depending on their genetics. The term “hybrid” can also refer to a crossbreed of two indica strains or two sativa strains.

The endocannabinoid system

Your endocannabinoid system promotes biological balance in many cells, tissues and organs.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) plays an integral role in the orchestration, maintenance and balance of optimal health and healing – also known as homeostasis. Although the endocannabinoid system has been in existence for over 600 million years and can be found in all animals except insects, it was only identified as a new system in 1988. Named after the cannabis plant that inspired its discovery, a strong endocannabinoid system is now recognized as being crucial for meeting a variety of basic needs in the human body.
